CASTLETOWNBERE
Fans
of Pete McCarthy's 'MacCarthy's Bar' will recognise the town,
and the facade that graces the front cover. Castletownbere
has a population of approximately 1500, and is primarily a
fishing port, with farming and tourism.

DUNBOY
The setting for Daphne Du Maurier's novel 'Hungry
Hill', based closely on the true lives of the Puxley family.
The mansion was burnt by a local IRA unit in 1921. The ruins
of the O'Sullivan Clan castle can also be seen in the grounds
of Dunboy. It is currently being restored into a hotel.

ISLANDS
Bere Island
lies just 1 mile off the coast, has a population of approximately
200 people. The village of Rerrin at the eastern end once
supported a large mackerel fishing fleet. The island was used
as a British naval base until 1939!
Dursey Island lies off the Western tip of
the peninsula. It is reached by Ireland's only cable car.
A popular destination for hill walkers, it is also a bird
sanctuary.
Lying west of Dursey Island
are the three rocks known as the Bull, the Cow and the Calf.

ALLIHIES
This
area has been mined for copper since ancient times, but brought
significant wealth and development to the area between 1812-1838.
It will soon be possible to visit the Allihies Mining Museum,
which will detail a history that has helped shape the landscape
of this beautiful area.

GLENGARRIFF
Once Ireland's premier tourist resort, and
still containing some of Ireland's oldest hotels, this area
boasts a micro-climate that allows a wonderful range of plants
to flourish, as evidenced by the Italian Gardens of Garnish
Island - one of Ireland's earliest tourist attractions.
Home to a colony of Harbour Seals, our paddlers have encountered
both pilot whales and porpoises in the exteme shelter of the
harbour.
